Health clubs
A good health club should provide the following fitness and exercise services and facilities:
- A physical assessment and initial trial of the equipment;
- A personal fitness programme, which should be reviewed regularly;
- Gym equipment for both resistance and cardiovascular workouts;
- A variety of weights;
- Qualified fitness instructors and personal trainers;
- A programme of exercise classes, such as aerobics;
- Some health clubs offer childcare or a creche;
- You may also have the use of a swimming pool, sauna or jacuzzi;
- In some cases, a sports therapy programme can be created for you.
- Make sure you can realistically fit regular visits to the gymnasium or health club into your lifestyle before you sign up.
- Find out how much notice you need to give if you want to cancel your membership, and if there is a financial penalty.
- Some health clubs offer off-peak gym membership packages, which may be a cheaper option if you can go to the gym within the specified times.
- If you already have a personal trainer, find out if the gym will let them accompany you—some gyms will only allow their own personal trainers on site.
- Some health clubs charge extra for exercise classes or use of their swimming pool—ask if this is the case before you sign up.
- If you travel a lot, find out if you can use other gyms or health clubs operated by the same company when you are away.
- Some gyms and health clubs will offer you a discount if you pay for a whole year in advance instead of paying by monthly instalments.
